GovChat
2020
South Africa
In South Africa, there has never been a more important time to bridge the divide between the public and private sectors — especially as the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) has the potential to further exclude economically disadvantaged communities.
GovChat is an application aimed at better enabling the government to engage with citizens, and vice versa.
The Challenge
GovChat is a platform designed to bridge the gap between South African citizens and government institutions. While the technology was powerful, the brand itself lacked warmth, clarity, and trust. In a country where the faith in government is often low, the visual identity needed more than just polish — it needed purpose. We were tasked with repositioning GovChat to feel more connected to the people it serves, more modern in its execution, and more reflective of South Africa’s vibrant, diverse identity.
The Insight
Trust isn’t given — it’s earned. For GovChat to be seen as a true civic tool, it needed to step out of the shadow of traditional government branding and step into something more human. South Africans are hungry for transparency, for representation, and for brands that feel like they see them. The rebrand had to embody that. From typography to tone, every design choice needed to say: this is for you.
The Execution
We crafted a refreshed identity that brought GovChat closer to the people. A vibrant, South African-inspired colour palette injected the brand with energy and optimism. Font choices were clean, modern, and approachable — balancing authority with warmth. We moved away from distant institutional styling, embracing imagery and design elements that reflected everyday South Africans. The result: a brand that feels as connected and human as the conversations it facilitates.
